You've made the exciting decision to explore LASIK. This guide will walk you through the simple but important steps to prepare for your procedure, ensuring you feel confident, comfortable, and ready for a successful outcome.
Preparing Your Eyes: The Contact Lens Holiday
Contact lenses can temporarily change the shape of your cornea. To get the most accurate measurements of your eyes, you will need to stop wearing them before your consultation and procedure. This is often called a "contact lens holiday."
Soft Contact Lenses
Typically, you will need to stop wearing soft contact lenses for 1 to 7 days before your evaluation. In some cases, if your corneal topography scans (like Pentacam/Orbscan) are normal, a 1-day pause may be sufficient. Please follow your surgeon's specific guidance.
Hard / RGP Lenses
Because rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses have a more significant effect on corneal shape, a longer break is required. This is typically 4 to 8 weeks, but the exact duration is patient-specific and will be determined by your surgeon.
Your Day-of-Surgery Checklist
Clean Face
Do not wear any eye makeup, creams, lotions, or perfumes from the night before your surgery.
Comfortable Clothing
Wear comfortable, non-shedding clothes. Avoid anything with loose fibers or animal hair.
Eat Normally
You can eat and drink as usual, but please avoid alcohol or any medications that cause drowsiness.
Arrange Your Ride
You must have someone to drive you home after the procedure. Your vision will be blurry.
Arrive Early
Plan to arrive a little early to complete any final paperwork without feeling rushed.
